301 to Wildcat Park

The trip this week 8/14/2011 is on the Little Manatee from 301 to a Wildcat park just down river from interstate 75. The Canoe Outpost is there and if you are looking to rent a canoe or Kayak, they have them to rent. (Kayaks rent for $30) Their trip runs to the Little Manatee River State Park.  We chose to launch under the bridge at 301 although you can launch at the canoe outpost the price is $5.00 and they will allow you to park there.  They will probably pick up for a fee at a park, but we went on down river to a park we found just past interstate 75. This is a great trip and is a good trip for even beginners or first timers. Once on the river we had a moderate flow that lets, you do a leisurely paddle down river. We ran into   some canoes but not very many. You have two rope swings along the route that add to the enjoyment of the trip. Even if you do not swing off the swing, it is fun to watch. The last place to swing has a drop that is about 30 feet out of a tree.  These are good places to cool off where you can swim or just relax in the water. As you travel down river from 301 it start out a little narrow a typical Florida river. There is plenty of room to paddle.  As you paddle you past several small streams that fall into the river. The banks of the river are steep in places. There are several places to do side trips to add to the length of the trip. One place had a good flow coming out and made a little challenge to paddle up stream. If you want different trips, there is several different ways you can go to see different scenery. As you get down about a mile from interstate 75, it starts getting wide. Our trip at this point the tide was coming in and the wind was blowing at us. This made it a challenging finish to a great trip. Our trip was about 7.5 hours but we spent a lot of time around the swings. This is a great trip, well worth taking. This trip is in some wilderness areas, although you will see some houses along the way there are several places you could take out to make your trip shorter.
